1-Week Intensive in High-Performance Knifemaking

The Patrick Joseph Masterclass

Enter the Forge. Begin your journey into the world of elite bladesmithing. This is not a hobby course.

This is a gateway into the discipline, tradition, and precision of true knife making — taught by Ireland’s only formally qualified bladesmith, and one of Europe’s most respected voices in the craft: Patrick Joseph.

Product Description

Held only a handful of times each year in Patrick’s private forge in Thomastown, Kilkenny, this 5-day immersive program is tailored for aspiring professionals, serious enthusiasts, and those ready to build a foundation of real skill — the kind that leads to a workshop of your own, a brand of your own, or a deeper respect for the tools you use every day.

What You will Experience

Over five focused days, you will be guided through the complete knifemaking process — from raw materials to fully finished blade — using the same techniques and tools Patrick employs in his award-winning work.

You will begin by exploring blade geometry, steel selection, and the role of metallurgy in high-performance knives. You will cut and profile your blade from scratch, then move into precise grinding and shaping, learning edge control and symmetry by hand and machine.

From there, you will undertake a controlled thermal cycle and heat treatment, working with professional-grade equipment to harden your blade to the highest standard. Finally, you will learn to fit, sculpt, and finish a custom handle, chosen from a selection of fine hardwoods and advanced composites — completing the knife with a finish worthy of display or daily use.

You will leave with a finished knife, but more importantly, a foundational understanding of what separates good from great — and how to pursue the path forward.

Your Training Includes:

  • Blade design theory and profiling techniques
  • Steel selection and practical metallurgy (RWL34, 1095, 15N20, etc.)
  • Freehand and guided bevel grinding
  • Heat treatment and tempering techniques!
  • Handle construction (full tang and hidden tang options)
  • Workshop safety, tool mastery, and finishing methods.
  • Branding and presentation insights for new makers
