From Separate Layers to a Single Blade
Your experience begins with preparing and stacking contrasting steels into a billet: the foundation of your Damascus knife. With Patrick’s guidance, you’ll learn about fluxing, forge-welding and the careful control of heat. Working with the hammer and forge press, you’ll discover how the layers are joined and worked into material ready to become a blade. As the steel develops, you’ll explore how patterns are formed and manipulated, including the principles behind ladder and twist designs. Each decision leaves its mark within the material. You’ll then shape and grind your blade, learning how its geometry influences both cutting performance and the pattern revealed across its surface. Thermal cycling, hardening and tempering prepare it for its life as a working knife.
The Moment the Pattern Appears
Etching reveals the work held within the steel. The layers that you prepared, welded and shaped become visible, bringing depth and contrast to the blade. It is the moment when the work of the forge reveals its character. Patrick will guide you through etching, polishing and finishing, helping you understand how these stages influence the blade’s final appearance. A sculpted handle completes the piece. You’ll work through fitting, shaping and assembly, bringing the materials together into a finished knife that feels comfortable and balanced in the hand.
Personal Guidance Throughout
Limited to two participants, this experience offers time to work closely with Patrick, ask questions and understand each stage. You’ll build confidence with unfamiliar tools and techniques, with safe working practices and guidance on hammer and forge press operation forming part of the learning throughout. No previous knifemaking skills are required. Patrick introduces each process as you reach it, bringing a bladesmith’s understanding of steel and a jeweller’s attention to detail. Whether you are discovering the forge for the first time or developing an existing interest, curiosity, patience and a willingness to learn are your starting points.
