From the First Heat to the Finished Edge
Your experience begins with understanding the knife you are going to make: its purpose, its proportions and the steel behind it. Then comes the forge. With Patrick’s guidance, you’ll learn to work heated steel, discovering how controlled hammer blows begin to shape your blade. As the knife develops, you’ll explore blade geometry, grinding and the importance of symmetry. You’ll learn how heat treatment and tempering influence performance, and why careful control matters as much as the work at the anvil. The handle brings another dimension to the making. Choose from the available hardwoods or composites, then learn to fit, shape and finish a handle that complements your blade and feels comfortable in the hand. Finishing and sharpening bring the work together: a knife with its own character, and a purpose beyond the five days.
Time to Go Further
The longer experience gives you room to understand the decisions behind each stage. You’ll have time to ask questions, practise techniques and appreciate how small details influence the finished piece. Patrick brings the knowledge of a bladesmith and the precision of a jeweller to his teaching, guiding you through both the practical work and the finer details. Whether this is your first workshop experience or the beginning of a lasting interest, no previous skills are required. Bring curiosity, patience and a willingness to get involved.
